The only way to provide successful dementia care is to understand the disease process, the importance of communication skills and the significance of the feelings behind the dementia related behaviors.

Course Goals & Objectives

Goals are:

  • To provide fundamental education on dementia and dementia care.
  • To enhance the quality of life of dementia patients through educating care providers.
  • Foster sensitivity & respect for the dementia client.
  • To teach communication techniques.
  • To provide sensitive approaches for assisting patients with activities of daily living.

Participants will:

  • Have an understanding of dementia.
  • Identify common causes of aggressive, repetitive and sundowning behaviors in older adults.
  • Describe behavioral/care interventions that may be used to prevent, reduce or eliminate difficult care situations.
  • Describe challenges related to caregiver stress and utilize stress reduction techniques.
  • Learn alternative activity interventions that are success oriented and failure free.
  • Receive certificate of attendance in seminar.

Who should attend: Nurses, CNA's, Social Workers, Activity Professionals, Geriatric Case Managers, Licensed Nursing Home Administrators, Certified Assisted Living Administrators, Pastoral Care Staff, Dietary Personnel, and all other long term care staff and care givers.

Continuing Education: 7 Continuing education hours have been approved with the following organizations:

National Certification Council for Activity Professionals
NJ Nursing Home Administrators Board
NJ Certified Assisted Living Administrators Board.

Instructors:

Lynn Biot-Gordon is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master of Social Work degree. She maintains a private practice and is a consultant for long term care facilities which includes in-services on a variety of topics for residents, families, and health care staff. She is the founder of Gordon Social Work Consultants.

Sandra Stimson is a Certified Activity Director and a Certified Assisted Living Administrator. In addition to serving as an Activity Director, Assistant Administrator, Director of Alzheimer's Units in LTC and residential facilities. She is also a volunteer speaker and facilitator for the Alzheimer's Association. Sandra designs and implements Alzheimer's Units in long term care facilities. She is co founder of Pet Express Pet Therapy program. Sandra is the Executive Director of Alternative Solutions in Long Term Care.

Frederick S. Brand holds a Master's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation and is a Certified Dementia Practitioner. He is a former Director of Programs and Services for the Alzheimer's Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter (1993-2001) and is currently the Executive Director of Bethel Ridge in Basking Ridge, NJ. An accomplished speaker on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, Mr. Brand has given seminars to statewide, national, and international audiences.

Registration Information: The tuition is $185.00 per person. You will receive confirmation of your registration with directions to the classroom site you have chosen. Once payment is received, you are enrolled unless otherwise notified. GSWC reserves the right to cancel seminars based on insufficient enrollment. Registrants who need to cancel must provide GSWC with written notice no later than one week prior to the seminar date. Cancellations are refundable less a $75.00 administrative charge. Substitutions may be made at any time. Continuing Education credits issued will be canceled for nonpayment of required fees.
